10th World Water Forum Defined Priority Water Programsand Promotes Global Water Fund

Jakarta (7/2/2024) - Indonesia successfully hosted the 10th World Water Forum from May 18-25, 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali. This event highlighted Indonesia's leading and strategic role in addressing global challenges, particularly in water resources management and climate change.

At the 10th World Water Forum, the Global Water Fund was launched with the aim of accelerating access to 100% clean water and sanitation by 2030. This initiative was launched in response to global inequality in access to clean water. About 2.2 billion people still do not have an adequate water supply.

Triono Junoasmono, Director General of Infrastructure Financing at the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH), emphasized the need for a massive expansion of water infrastructure. The project requires an estimated 6.7 trillion dollars by 2030, which could rise to 22.6 trillion dollars by 2050.

"At the 10th World Water Forum, we advocated for an increase in funding for water infrastructure, one proposal being the Global Water Fund. The Global Water Fund is crucial to addressing the current global water situation," Triono explained during the "Bincang Kita" event on Kompas TV's YouTube channel, on Tuesday (7/2/2024).

In addition to the Global Water Fund, the 10th World Water Forum also produced a Ministerial Declaration with a Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions, comprising 113 water-related projects worth 9.4 billion dollars.

"Indonesia's task now is to work out the plans and implementation of the Global Water Fund to ensure its success. The Global Water Fund will serve as an integrated platform with funding sources from various sectors, including governments, the private sector, financial institutions, international organizations and philanthropists," Triono said.

Triono mentioned that delegates at the 10th World Water Forum responded positively to the Global Water Fund initiative. Many countries immediately declared their support for Indonesia's proposal, although some needed further clarification on the Global Water Fund system.

Ervan Maksum, Deputy for Infrastructure at the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), praised the Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions as a significant breakthrough that Indonesia, as the host country of the 10th World Water Forum, has achieved. He noted that the agreement on these 113 projects represents tangible results beyond capacity building.

"We want to take something away from the 10th World Water Forum. That is why we have openly formulated the Concrete Deliverables. Indonesia invited the world to list water-related projects in their countries, which were then consolidated with donors and other committed nations," Ervan said.

The Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions is also included in the United Nations' water-related agenda. Ervan explained that these programs are being monitored to become a global water agenda that will have a tangible impact on communities worldwide.
