Jakarta, May 10, 2024 – Inclusive water governance for sustainable, fair and equitable management of water resources around the world is one of the important topics of the 10th World Water Forum which will soon take place in Bali from May 18-25, 2024.
Chair of Secretariat of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum and Secretary General of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) Mohammad Zainal Fatah said the forum is a milestone for Indonesia to join global efforts in addressing water management challenges.
"This forum brings together participants from all levels and areas, including politics, multilateral institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector, among others, to share experiences, innovations and solutions for the management and protection of water resources, especially with the impact of climate change becoming increasingly evident," he said on Friday (5/10/2024).
Under the overarching theme "Water for Shared Prosperity", the Forum consists of three main processes, namely the political process, the regional process and the thematic process, in which all relevant stakeholders are involved. The thematic process consists of six sub-themes: Water Security and Prosperity, Water for Humans and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Governance, Cooperation and Hydro Diplomacy, Sustainable Water Financing, and Knowledge and Innovation.
The regional processes include the Asia-Pacific region, the American continent, Africa and the Mediterranean region. The political process comprises five levels, namely heads of state, parliaments, ministries, local authorities and basin authorities.
Each country has its own water management problems and priorities, so a comprehensive regional approach must be adopted. As far as the political process is concerned, water management policy is discussed in stages, starting from the facilitator and implementer to the head of state," he added.
Meanwhile, Chair of Division VI: Registration, Websites and Information Systems of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum and Special Advisor on Water Resources at the MPWH, Firdaus Ali, added that Indonesia would also bring the spirit of peace to water diplomacy. The dialog that Indonesia will conduct at this forum should uphold human dignity and provide solutions to problems.
“The 10th World Water Forum is a monumental gathering to change the policies, spirit and enthusiasm so that we face the future together and make water a source of life and peace, not the other way around, a source of conflict and disaster," he said.
The 10th World Water Forum, which is jointly held by the Indonesian government and the World Water Council (WWC), will also put forward four proposals that will lead to a joint agreement. The four proposals include the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience, mainstreaming integrated water resources management (IWRM) in small islands, the declaration of World Lakes Day, and the inclusion of a list of activities as a concrete follow-up actions to the 10th World Water Council in the Compendium of Concrete Outcomes and Actions of the Ministerial Declaration.
