Jakarta, May 10, 2024 - The 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18-25, 2024, aims to create investment opportunities for water infrastructure development in Indonesia and other countries to achieve the goal of access to water for all. This event will also have many positive impacts on economic growth in Indonesia as a host country, and provide an opportunity to promote tourism and creative industries.
The Chair of Division VI: Registration, Website and Information System of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of 10th World Water Forum and Special Advisor on Water Resources at the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) of the Republic of Indonesia, Firdaus Ali, said “The 10th World Water Forum will produce several important agreements for Indonesia, including bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the water sector worth trillions of rupiah. There are already commitments that have been discussed, including several projects worth up to one trillion.”
“The 10th World Water Forum will certainly open up investment opportunities for water infrastructure projects in Indonesia,” he affirmed on CNBC Indonesia TV's program Evening Up/Focus: Preparations for the 10th World Water Forum, Tuesday (5/7/24).
The opportunities for cooperation with other countries relate to water infrastructure development, technology and innovation in water management and access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation in a number of remote areas, as well as various other aspects related to the main theme of the 10th World Water Forum, namely “Water for Shared Prosperity”.
Commenting on the promising prospects for investment in water infrastructure projects, Chair of Secretariat of the NOC of the 10th World Water Forum and Secretary General of the MPWH, Mohammad Zainal Fatah said that the Indonesian government will offer a number of strategic projects in the water sector at the 10th World Water Forum worth US$9.6 billion or IDR154 trillion.
The list of projects is currently being selected and compiled by the Ministry of National Planning and Development (PPN/Bappenas). "It contains many proposals for projects worth USD9.6 billion, whether in the form of projects already underway or new projects for which funds are already available," he said at the preparatory coordination meeting for the 10th National Water Forum.
Meanwhile, the Deputy for Coordination of Environment and Forestry Management at the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment of the Republic of Indonesia, Nani Hendiarti, said, “Currently, the proportion of investment in the drinking water sector specifically developed for access to piped water is only 20.6 percent. To increase this share to 30 percent, the government needs a budget of around IDR123 trillion.”
According to Nani, the government revenue and expenditure budget (Anggaran Pendapatan dan Belanja Negara/APBN) can only cover about 30 to 37 percent of the financing needs for water infrastructure development. Therefore, a mixed financing system is needed to close this gap, including funds from investments.
“The 10th World Water Forum, which will be attended by many countries, will open up investment opportunities for water infrastructure projects in Indonesia,” she concluded. (Firda Puri)
