Bali Presents the Wisdom of Segara Kerthi to the Delegates of the 10th World WaterForum

Jakarta, May 1, 2024 - The Bali Provincial Government will introduce the local wisdom of Segara Kerthi and Tumpek Uye to the delegates of the 10th World Water Forum which is planned to be held in Kura-Kura Bali Special Economic Zone (KEK) Beach area in Denpasar on May 18, 2024.

"Bali has a local wisdom to glorify water with Segara Kerthi, which we want to show to the world, especially to the delegates of the 10th World Water Forum," said the Head of the Government and Welfare Offce of the Regional Secretariat of Bali Province (Kepala Biro Pemerintahan dan Kesra Setda) I Ketut Sukra Negara in Denpasar on Tuesday (30/4/2024).

Bali will host the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Badung Regency, Bali, from May 18-25, 2024.

Sukra said that the local wisdom Segara Kerthi, which means glorification of water, especially beaches and the sea, goes back to the teachings of Hinduism. Segara Kerthi is a part of the Sad Kerthi teachings or the six noble behaviors to protect the universe.

"With this Segara Kerthi ritual, the Balinese have local wisdom not only on a sekala or physical basis, but also on a niskala or spiritual basis," he said.

He added that the Segara Kerthi ritual, which will be held on May 18, 2024, also coincides with the holy day of Tumpek Uye/Tumpek Kandang, which is celebrated by Hindus every 210 days. Tumpek Uye is celebrated as a form gratitude and glorification of animals that have helped human life.

Therefore, said Sukra, on May 18, the Segara Kerthi ceremony, apart from using Caru Panca Kelud offerings and holding joint prayers, will also include the release of tukik or hatchlings and bird to pay homage to the universe, flora, fauna, and their habitats.

The Segara Kerthi ritual or ceremony is conducted by three Sulinggih or Hindu priests and involves the communities in the traditional village of serangan. "We have coordinated with the Bendesa (leaders) of Serangan village and will mobilize their traditional communities to make the Segara Kerthi and Tumpek Uye activities a success," he said.

The procession for the Segara Kerthi ritual series will start at 8 a.m. (local time) while the collective prayer will be held at 6 p.m. (local time). "Delegations from participating countries will have the opportunity to experience the enchanting Tumpek Uye and Segara Kerthi ceremony as well as a series of sacred dances that will accompany the Segara Kerthi ceremonies," he added.

After the joint prayer, the event will continue with the release of hatchlings and birds prepared by the Bali Provincial Agency for Environment and Forestry.
