Indonesia Promotes Community-based Drinking Water and Sanitation Program‘Pamsimas’ at the 10th World Water Forum

Badung, May 9, 2024 – The Indonesian government will be presenting a Community-Based Drinking Water and Sanitation Provision Program (Program Penyediaan Air Minum dan Sanitasi Berbasis Masyarakat/ Pamsimas) as one of its best practices at the 10th World Water Forum which will be held in Bali from May 18 to 25, 2024.

The Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum
and Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH), Basuki Hadimuljono, said that the Pamsimas program has been implemented by the government for 15 years and its successful development is therefore very important for presentation at the 10th World
Water Forum.

The program, Hadimuljono added, is fully implemented by the community, from planning to implementation and management of the facilities, giving priority to local wisdom in each region.

“Pamsimas is an assertive program. The main target is areas where water is scarce. So if it is established in an area with an abundance of water, it will not be effective," Minister Basuki said in his statement on Thursday (5/9/2024).

Meanwhile, Director General of Cipta Karya of the MPWH, Diana Kusumastuti, said that Pamsimas and Sanimas (Community-based Sanitation Program) are actual examples of procurement, management and maintenance of clean water based on community empowerment with the full support of the central government in infrastructure development and financing. “This is also a model of collaboration between the center and regional government and communities in providing adequate clean water as well as in responding to the challenge of stunting in remote villages,” she said.

She further explained that Indonesia is committed to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) targets, one of which is ensuring access to safe water and sanitation for all.

In order to achieve the SDGs, the government is aligning them with the National Medium-
Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2020-2024. This envisages that 90% of households should have access to adequate sanitation facilities by the end of 2024, 15% of which should have access to safe sanitation facilities, and that proportion of the open defecation should be reduced to 0%. In the meantime, data shows that access to adequate drinking water in Indonesia has already reached 90%.

Diana said that the 10th World Water Forum is expected to serve as a place for the exchange of strategies and best practices between Indonesia and other countries. "It is also hoped that collaborations between countries will emerge, especially in global and local efforts to address access to drinking water and sanitation," she added.

She concluded that the 10th World Water Forum should be able to create synergies with
various stakeholders in addressing global water challenges and solutions through policy and regional actions to achieve the common goal of “Water for shared Prosperity”. (Firda
