Indonesia Promotes Green Infrastructure Projects at the 10th World Water Forum

Jakarta, May 3, 2024 – The Indonesian government will promote the exchange of knowledge, research, innovation and technology on water resources management together with other countries at the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18 to 25, 2024. One of the topics addressed is the development of green energy-based infrastructure to support the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target in 2060.

The Minister of Public Works and Public Housing of the Republic of Indonesia, Basuki Hadimuljono, as Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum, said in his statement in Jakarta on Friday (5/3/2024) that the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) prioritizes the principles of a sustainable environment in the development and provision of infrastructure by optimizing all available potentialities.

“One of these is the increased use of 187 existing dams and 61 new dams built between
2015 and 2024. The aim is to provide renewable electrical energy from hydropower and
solar energy and to develop waste-to-energy projects,” he said.

The MPWH is also developing a waste-to-energy system to use methane gas from waste as an alternative energy source, which has already been implemented in Balikpapan (East
Kalimantan) and Banjarbakula (South Kalimantan).

“We also apply the RDF (Refuse-Derived Fuel) method, such as at the Tritih Lor Integrated Waste Processing Site (Tempat Pengolahan Sampah Terpadu/ TPST) in Cilacap Regency (Central Java), Cicukang Holis in Bandung, Kersiman Kertalangu, Padangsambian Kaja and
Tahura in Denpasar, Bali," he added.

In addition, to supply raw water and overcome the drought, the MPWH is introducing the
technology of the Hydro-Powered Water Pump (Pompa Air Tenaga Hidro/ PATH), i.e. a water pump that is driven by the rotational power of a water-powered turbine without being converted into electrical energy.

PATH technology is very simple because the drive does not use any electrical energy sources or other fuels, so people can operate it easily. The application of PATH technology has been implemented and well accepted in Temanggung and Magelang, Central Java and Pacitan, East Java as well as in Humbang Hasundutan (Humbahas) Regency in North Sumatra, Sekampung Dam in Lampung Province and Pidekso Dam in Wonogiri, Central Java.

In line with the development of research and technology in the field of water resources, Deputy for Development Policy at the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Mego Pinandito, said he also developed several programs to promote cooperation between developed and developing countries at the 10th World Water Forum, including an international research program to address climate change in the context of water resources management.

“We can see that research and innovation play an important role in finding solutions to the global water crisis. We cannot deny that climate change has a huge impact on human
development and security," said Mego.

At the 10th World Water Forum, BRIN will also present various technological research projects in the field of water resources. These include the Prototype Program House (Rumah Program Purwarupa) in the field of hydrometeorological and climate disaster monitoring technology, the development of an intelligent system for early warning of floods in the Bekasi catchment area, called SIAGA (River Water Level Monitoring and Natural Symptoms Information System).

Another research project is a hybrid wetland system with adsorbents for the treatment of
pollutants from the textile industry. Moreover, to welcome the 10th World Water Forum,
BRIN will also launch the SIDANAU application, which contains information about lakes in
Indonesia and a decision support system for lake management.

“We certainly hope that we and countries around the world can learn from each other about technological innovations that are very likely to be implemented by each country," Mego concluded.

For your information, the Indonesian government, together with the World Water Council
(WWC), has prepared a series of meeting forums in preparation for the peak event of the
10th World Water Forum. The Forum consists of three main processes, namely a political, a regional and a thematic process. The synergy of these three processes is necessary to
achieve the goal of water for shared prosperity.
