Indonesia Showcases Lake Toba Water Quality Improvement as Best Practices at the 10th World Water Forum

Badung, May 17, 2024 - Indonesia will present its best practices to eliminate pollution and improve the water quality of Lake Toba in North Sumatra through the development of Wastewater Treatment Plants (Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah/ IPAL) at the 10th World Water Forum to be held in Bali from May 18-25, 2024.

“The efforts to improve the water quality of Lake Toba are best practices that we can highlight in the activities of the 10th World Water Forum," said the Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the 10th World Water Forum and Indonesian Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) in his statement on Friday (5/17/2024).

The MPWH has built the pipeline network of the Parapat wastewater treatment plant, which connects two areas, namely Parapat, Simalungun regency and Ajibata, Toba regency. The construction of the IPAL network has effectively prevented the pollution of Lake Toba by domestic wastewater, including from households and hotels.

This project also aims to promote the development of Lake Toba as one of the five priority destinations (Destinasi Pariwisata Super Prioritas/ DPSP) together with Borobudur, Likupang, Mandalika and Labuan Bajo, which were launched by President Joko Widodo through the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf).

"Infrastructure development in each DPSP is planned in an integrated manner, including land use planning, roads, provision of raw and clean water, waste disposal, sanitation, and improvement of housing conditions for residents through an infrastructure development master plan," he explained.

Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said that the construction of the Parapat IPAL network has been carried out by the Regional Settlement Infrastructure Center (BPPW) since September 2020 with a budget of IDR 59.42 billion.

The Parapat IPAL network was constructed from Jalan Sisingamangaraja, Sosor Saba Terminal and Jalan Anggarajim and then flowed into the Pantai Bebas IPAL, which was processed on the banks of the Sijambur Ajibata area alongside facultative ponds, maturation and sludge drying ponds.

The theme of the 10th World Water Forum is "Water for Shared Prosperity" and includes the following sub-themes: Water Security and Prosperity, Water for Humans and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Governance, Cooperation and Hydro- Diplomacy, Sustainable Water Financing, and Knowledge and Innovation.
