Jakarta, May 13, 2024 – The Indonesian government presents the successful introduction of modular weir technology for irrigation at the 10th World Water Forum, which will take place in Bali from May 18 to 25, 2024.
The modular weir technology developed by the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) can raise the water level of rivers to such an extent that it can be used to supply water to irrigation canals. The technology is intended to ensure the availability of water and increase water productivity for the irrigation of agricultural land and food security.
The Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the 10th World Water Forum and Minister of Public Works and Public Housing, Basuki Hadimuljono, said innovation and technology are necessary for water infrastructure development. This is in line with the 10th World Water Forum's goal of “Water for Shared Prosperity”.
"The use of appropriate, efficient and environmentally friendly technologies will also be promoted to create added value and sustainable development so that the benefits of infrastructure can be felt by future generations," Basuki said in his statement on Monday (5/13/2024).
Modular construction is a process in which a building is constructed off-site under controlled factory conditions, using the same materials and construction that meet the same codes and standards as conventionally constructed buildings. Generally, modular construction is used in remote areas where conventional construction is not possible.
James Zulfan, one of the researchers in the field of modular weir engineering at the Water Hydraulics and Geotechnical Center of the MPWH, explained that the modular weir consists of a modified form of prefabricated concrete blocks that are interlocked and locked together to form a single unit. The construction method is simpler and faster, resulting in time and cost savings of around 40%.
“Like Lego, modular weirs have the same strength and function as conventional weirs," James said on Monday (5/13/2024) on the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of State Apparatus Empowerment and Bureaucratic Reforms.
This innovation has been registered and patented by the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights and is still being developed and implemented in collaboration with labor-intensive programs.
The results of the field trial in the Cikarag River in West Java in 2013 showed positive performance, with the prototype modular structure functioning well as a weir. Subsequently, the innovation was implemented on the Kalisade River in West Nusa Tenggara Province in 2016 and on the Gugubali River in Morotai, North Maluku Province in 2019.
