Badung, 18 May 2024 – Collaboration to build sustainable global resilience is critical to address water challenges and concerns that have arisen in recent years. Indonesia consistently emphasizes this point in different international forums, including the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, held from 18 to 25 May 2024.
"Hence, it is imperative to establish collaborative cooperation and concrete agreements. Take, for instance, the management of rivers that traverse multiple regions, like the Rhine River in Europe and the Mekong River in Asia," stated Deputy for Systems and Strategy at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Raditya Jati during a Saturday interview on 18 May 2024.
Sustainable resilience refers to the capacity to establish a resilient environment in dealing with disasters both structurally and nonstructurally.
Raditya also explained that climate change has become a major contributor to many global water concerns. For example, excessive rain resulting from climate change caused floods and landslides in numerous countries.
Similarly, climate change-induced droughts resulted in collateral effects such as forest fires, crop failure, food shortages, and even poverty and food security issues.
"This has become our challenge in building sustainable resilience. This involves all existing systems, including the triggers, especially climate change, and how to accomplish sustainable development,” Raditya stated.
He stated that discussions on addressing the challenge of climate change have taken place globally, such as at the 2015 Paris Agreement and in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Indonesia has passed a regulation to address the issues posed by disasters, as outlined in Presidential Regulation No. 87 of 2020 on the 2020—2044 Disaster Management Master Plan (RIPB).
"When we talk about disasters, we mean something that affects infrastructure or society. Later, it will be linked to spatial planning, environmental damage, or even infrastructural development, leading to new risks. So here's an example of collaboration. This means that everyone plays a role because all sectors are developing their respective roles to build resilience," said BNPB's Deputy for Systems and Strategy. (Wahyu/TR/Elvira Inda Sari/SC/PR)
