On the occasion of the 84th Board of Governors (BoG) Meeting of the World Water Council in Beijing, China on September 8-9, 2023, the Indonesia Government submitted a progress report on preparations for the 10th World Water Forum in 2024.
Indonesia was appointed to be the host country for the largest international water forum in the world during the 9th World Water Forum in Senegal. The upcoming 10th World Water Forum will take place in Bali from 18 to 24 May 2024.
Special Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) for Technology, Industry and the Environment Endra Saleh Atmawidjaja, representing the National Organizing Committee, said that the Indonesian Government together with the World Water Council had taken thorough preparatory steps towards the 10th World Water Forum, which is eight months away.
He stated that "In less then a year, the 10th World Water Forum will take place in Bali and the Indonesian government is striving to make this a momentous event during which the World Water Forum will convene various stakeholders to deliver key messages and make global commitment in the water sector."
The World Water Forum, which is held every three years, is a process that continues to develop since its inaugural in 1997 in Marrakesh, to the ninth in Senegal. In the process, the Forum draws attention to the ongoing global water challenges and brings together high-level decision makers such as heads of state, members of parliament, ministers and other stakeholders.
"We ensure that the National Organizing Committee (NOC) under the leadership of President Joko Widodo will work with relevant local and global partners to achieve successful outcomes and impacts in addressing various global water challenges. Moreover, President Joko Widodo has conveyed relevant messages on water to the world and to the Heads of States at the G20 Meeting in Bali and the Kickoff of the 10th World Water Forum in Jakarta," said Endra.
The 1st Kick-off Meeting or Stakeholder Consultation Meeting (SCM) on 15-16 February 2023 at the Jakarta Convention Center, which was attended by 1400 participants from 58 countries, marked a milestone in the preparation of the 10th World Water Forum.
In the thematic process, the World Water Council and the National Committe have received more than 400 interested parties who will become Topic Coordinators. Meanwhile, for the regional process, 4 regions are already engaged in ongoing discussions to prepare world plans, results and roadmaps.
As for the political process, an agreement has been signed with UNESCO for the Ministerial level process and UCLG for the city Government level process. And finally, at the International Conference on Water and Climate on 6-7 July in Morocco, an agreement was signed between the National Committee and the International Networks on Basin Organizations (INBO) for a political process at the River Basin level.
Furthermore, the Indonesian Government will also organize the 2nd Stakeholder Consultation Meeting (SCM) on 12-13 October 2023 at InterContinental Resort Jimbaran, Bali with an inclusive program consisting of thematic, regional and political processes.
"We are targeting around 800 national and international participants to attend the 2nd SCM. This meeting aims to form working groups, discuss work plans for the Forum in each process, as well as follow-up after the forum," he added.
The 2nd SCM of the World Water Forum 2024 will be a place for stakeholders participating in political, thematic and regional processes in the remaining 8 months together the outcomes and to ensure that the Forum will produce tangible effects and benefits for Indonesia as the host country.
