Indonesian Government Encouragesthe Establishment of Global Water Fund at 10th World Water Forum

Jakarta, 30 April 2024 – The Indonesian government is proposing the establishment of the Global Water Fund at the 10th World Water Forum, which will take place in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18th to 25th, 2024. The discussion on this issue will be addressed in the three main processes of the Forum, including political, regional and thematic processes. 

Director General of Public Works Infrastructure and Housing Finance, also as Coordinator of the Sustainable Water Financing Sub-theme of the 10th WWF Herry Trisaputra Zuna emphasized that the establishment of the Global Water Fund is paramount to providing long-term funding for clean water and sanitation initiatives. 

He noted that the establishment of the Global Water Fund is expected to tackle the funding gap and accelerate the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 on clean water and sanitation by 2030.

“Currently, there are 2.2 billion people in the world who still lack access to safely managed water. The Global Water Fund, which is projected to cover water infrastructures,  water-related disasters mitigation, climate change adaptation and associated monitoring mechanisms, offers lasting financial support to respond to these challenges," Herry stated. 

Regarding efforts to design water financing architecture within the framework of the Global Water Fund, Director of the Center for Climate Funding and Multilateral Policy, Fiscal Policy Agency, Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia Boby Wahyu Hernawan said it was important to review the lesson learnt from the Pandemic Fund and the Green Climate Fund. 

He further explained that the Indonesian government has established the Indonesia Water Fund (IWF) to advance investments and the provision of clean water across Indonesia. “The IWF is expected to operate up to USD 1 billion of funding for clean water projects,” he said. 

Secretary General of the MPWH, also as Head of the Secretariat of the National Organizing Committee for the 10th WWF Muhammad Zainal Fatah said that the a concept note on Global Water Fund, as a new policy proposal for securing and increasing funding for water infrastructure will be brought and further elaborated at the 10th World Water Forum scheduled to be held in Bali on May 18-25, 2024,” he added. 

The Indonesian government will bring four important missions to the 10th World Water Forum, firstly the presence of a centralized network in the Asia-Pacific region, specifically dealing with issues of water security, climate change and environmental research.

Secondly, the establishment of networks of institutions, academics, research organizations and other international bodies. Third, the establishment of a consortium focused on data centers. And finally, the coordination and implementation of various multi-stakeholder efforts to develop a statement or initiative on global water issues. In addition, the government is also promoting the designation of the World Lakes Day at the 10th World Water Forum to maintain the sustainability of water resources.
