Jakarta, May 17, 2024 – In an effort to encourage the Indonesian tourism sector, especially in Bali, and to improve its quality and sustainability, the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy/ Tourism and Creative Economy Agency is gathering tourism stakeholders to take immediate steps to address the issues at hand.
“To welcome the 10th World Water Forum and to ensure that tourism in Bali becomes increasingly high quality and sustainable, we are organizing a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) to find solutions to current problems and improve our future steps to capitalize on Bali's position as a leading tourist destination while preserving the culture and Balinese taksu," said the Head of Division V of the 10th World Water Forum Fair and Expo and Indonesian Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, on the occasion of “Bali Tourism Stakeholders FGD” at Bali Tourism Polytechnic on Thursday (5/16/2024).
One of the topics also discussed at the FDG was the widespread unethical behavior of some foreign nationals (WNA) in Bali that has been circulated on social media and could damage the image of tourism in Bali.
Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga emphasized that the police had conducted an investigation and hoped that all parties, including the community, would respond better if there was anything that could harm Bali's tourism image and Indonesia as a whole.
"We hope to strengthen measures to protect and monitor our tourism ecosystem, including by involving the village chiefs or “bendesa” and surrounding communities in joint supervision," said Sandiaga.
Another issue discussed at the FGD concerned immigration violations and criminality, including several cases being dealt with by the authorities, particularly the case of an illegal hydroponic marijuana and mephedrone laboratory in a villa in the Canggu area of Badung, Bali. The foreigners involved in this case were known to be living with temporary residence permits (Kitas).
“We hope that decisive action can be taken against such things to ensure quality tourism. There are several steps we can take at macro and micro level to send a clear message to the world that we have zero tolerance for crimes that happen in the world's leading tourism destinations like Bali," he affirmed.
The Minister also hoped that Bali and Indonesia in general can become a reference for quality and sustainable tourism in the world.
