Indonesia’s Government Prepares for the 10th World Water Forum 2023 through Political, Regional, and Thematic Processes

The Government of Indonesia and the World Water Council (WWC), will co-host a series of forums leading up to the forthcoming 10th World Water Forum in 2024. The forums consist of three main processes: Political, Regional, and Thematic.

“The three processes, namely political, regional, and thematic, will serve as coordination of various efforts towards tangible actions and solutions, through prioritized political and regional agendas, as well as identified main themes.” explained the Expert Staff for Technology, Industry, and Environment of the Minister of Public Works and Housing, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, during the 21st High-level Experts and Leaders Panel (HELP) on Water and Disasters in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday (27/6/2023).

Creating Efficiency and Equity

Politically, a strong governance framework and policies are essential to ensure efficient and equitable management and distribution of water. Regional collaboration is crucial to address transboundary water issues, promote innovation exchange, and develop joint strategies for sustainable water use.

On the other hand, thematic processes focusing on specific water-related challenges, such as water scarcity, pollution, and climate change, are essential to drive innovation, knowledge sharing, and targeted solutions.

By integrating these processes, we can foster collaboration, enhance resources efficiency, and pave the way towards a prosperous and sustainable future, where water is accessible to everyone.

Political Forums at Various Levels

Recognizing the importance of political aspects in water issues, the 10th World Water Forum will also address them as one of the key issues in the series of activities leading to the main agenda in May 2024.

Political forums discussing policies will commence in August 2023 with the 1st Senior Official Meeting, followed by the 2nd Senior Official/High-level Official Meetings in the agenda of the 2nd Stakeholders Consultation Meeting in October 12-13, 2023.

This political forum will consist of meetings of leaders at various levels: Head of State, parliamentary, ministerial, local government, and river basin managers. Additionally, river basin manager-level meetings will be held during the 3rd International Conference on Water and Climate in Fes, Morocco, in early July 2023.

Meanwhile, the regional forums will be divided into five major regions, including the Mediterranean, Asia Pacific, Americas, and Africa. As for the thematic forums, they will address six sub-themes: Water Resilience and Well-being, Water for People and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction, Water Diplomacy and Governance, Sustainable Water Management Financing, and Innovation and Knowledge.

The 10th World Water Forum in Bali in 2024 will consist of at least 166 sessions to accommodate these political, regional, and thematic processes. Therefore, the Government of Indonesia will highly appreciate the participation of HELP and the wider global community in supporting the 10th World Water Forum.
