Road to the 10th World Water Forum,World Water Council and UNESCO held the 2nd Preparatory Meeting

In preparation for the 10th World Water Forum, the World Water Council, in collaboration with UNESCO, organized the 2nd Preparatory Meeting of the 10th World Water Forum (PrepMeet-2) on March 28–29, 2024, at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

The meeting invited representatives from all 194 UNESCO member states, as well as several international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). On this occasion, Indonesia presented its ideas regarding the Ministerial Declaration of the 10th World Water Forum.

These ideas consisted of plans for establishing a Centre of Excellence on Water and Climate Resilience; mainstreaming Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) on Small Islands; and designating World Lake Day or International Lake Day.

Indonesia also intended to incorporate these ideas into the Ministerial Declaration Compendium of Concrete Deliverables and Actions (Compendium) as a list of concrete follow-up activities/initiatives following the 10th World Water Forum.

Ministerial Declaration and the UN

The discussion sessions highlighted several main issues including linking the Ministerial Declaration with processes in the UN, cooperation on transboundary resource management, indigenous peoples, water-related data exchange, access to water, and references to international law.

The four priority proposals from Indonesia received full attention during the discussion sessions and were accepted into the Ministerial Declaration by PrepMeet-2 participants. Thus, PrepMeet-2 successfully finalized a concise, balanced, and action-oriented draft of the Ministerial Declaration.

This draft has been circulated to all UNESCO member state representatives and will be adopted by the Ministers as the Ministerial Declaration at the upcoming 10th World Water Forum in Bali.

The attending Indonesian delegation at PrepMeet-2 included representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, the Ministry of National Development Planning (PPN)/Bappenas, BMKG, and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.
