Stockholm - Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono, in his capacity as the Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the 10th World Water Forum, attended one of the Side events organized by the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF) at the 2023 World Water Week in Stockholm, Sweden (Tuesday, 22/8/2023). The meeting was focused on the issues of climate change adaptation in the Asia Pacific region.
Ervan Maksum, Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure in the Ministry of National Development Planning, as member of the NOC of the10th World Water Forum, representing the Vice Chairman of the NOC, said that climate change has contributed to reduced water availability, changes in crop productivity, loss of biodiversity, and an increased risk of floods and droughts. These impacts certainly create more challenges and threats in the future.
"In order to address this issue, strategic partnerships between countries and related parties in finding solutions and implementing real actions must be continued and improved," said Ervan.
He affirmed that Indonesia has been practicing sustainable development by increasing water resistance in watersheds (DAS) and controlling water cycle through several integrated water resources development projects such as in Citarum, Bengawan Solo and Brantas Rivers. These approaches were significant in building resilience to climate change-related disasters.
He added that there are a number of water challenges that need to be addressed by governments and stakeholders around the world, namely increasing access to clean water and sanitation, addressing the link between water, disasters and climate change, overcoming energy and food crises and building peace through water resources management.
“Asia-Pacific countries have the potential to play a leading role in the international community in the coming years. They must take the initiative while working with other countries to accelerate the development. Political leaders in water and other sectors must also fulfill their responsibility to demonstrate their commitment and lead substantive discussions," explained Ervan.
The Vice Chairman of the NOC of the 10th World Water Forum Basuki Hadimuljono also invited all delegates to attend the forum in Bali next year. The 10th World Water Forum will be an excellent opportunity for leaders to come together and carry out political dialogues which aim to formulate solutions to water problems and develop roadmaps to implement the plans and policies.
