Nusa Dua, May 19, 2024 – The Indonesian government hopes that the 10th World Water Forum can turn tears into springs. With the theme "Water for Shared Prosperity", the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Bali from 18-25 May 2024, has an important significance in promoting global commitment to overcoming the looming water crisis and various challenges in sustainable water management.
“As the largest archipelago, Indonesia has a strategic role in promoting global cooperation to develop holistic, comprehensive and inclusive solutions. And since water is vital, we hope that the 10th World Water Forum will turn tears into springs,” said the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi at a press conference at the Media Center of the 10th World Water Forum at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) 2, Nusa Dua, Bali, on Sunday (5/19/2024).
UN Water 2024 reports that as of 2022, roughly half of the world's population experienced severe water scarcity. And it is reported that 2.2 billion people live without access to safely managed drinking water and 3.5 billion people have no access to sanitation.
"Under these conditions, achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 6 on clean water and sanitation by 2030 is currently unattainable," said the Director General for Multilateral Cooperation at the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tri Tharyat, at the press conference.
The UN Secretary-General's report states that developing countries in general have achieved only 12 percent of the target. This is a common challenge to which we must also respond together.
“Indonesia is a country that is quite advanced in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In 2023, Indonesia will achieve a level of fulfillment of access to water and sanitation of more than 66 percent," said Director General Tri Tharyat.
According to Director General Tri Tharyat, the 10th World Water Forum is expected to produce a ministerial-level declaration that will be part of hydro-diplomacy, including Indonesian diplomacy on global water issues.
In addition to the activities that will be remembered as phenomenal activities in terms of implementation, Indonesia's legacy will be the Compendium of Deliverables, a collection of projects curated by relevant ministries and institutions in Indonesia that are labeled as real results that have been implemented in Indonesia and around the world.
The 10th World Water Forum kicked off with the Balinese Water Purification Ceremony on Saturday (5/18) and will continue on until Friday (5/25) with a series of discussion panels and side events.
