Indonesian House of Representatives Prepare Parliamentary Session at the 10th World Water Forum

Bali (22/4/2024) - The 10th World Water Forum involves all parts of the society, including policymakers who play a crucial role in the political process. The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) is actively contributing to the success of this international forum.

The National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum, together with the Indonesian House of Representatives, held a coordination meeting on April 22, 2024, specifically focusing on agenda items related to the parliamentary session.

From May 19 to 22, 2024, the Indonesian House of Representatives will host the "Parliamentary Meeting on the Occasion of the 10th World Water Forum" event to bring together representatives from various countries. They will discuss water-related issues under the theme: "Mobilizing Parliamentary Action on Water for Shared Prosperity."

The readiness of the venue, the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC), for the 10th World Water Forum was one aspect discussed during the meeting. The DPR has coordinated to ensure the readiness of the venue for the Parliamentary Session.

The Indonesian government has prepared a number of agendas for the 10th World Water Forum Parliamentary Meeting. On May 19, 2024, the delegates will be invited to the Welcome Dinner of 10th World Water Forum with the presence of the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, at Garuda Wisnu Kencana.

Then, on May 20-21, 2024, the delegates are scheduled to attend Plenary Sessions and field visits to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Subak Jatiluwih in Tabanan, Bali. They will have the opportunity to learn about Bali's traditional water management systems.

The Plenary Sessions will be held four times with different themes: Plenary Session I: "Access to water and sanitation: a deal-breaker for achieving sustainable development”, Plenary Session II: Q"Innovative practice for inclusive and equitable access to water”, Plenary Session III: "Water at the heart of climate action," and finally, Plenary Session IV: "Water Diplomacy, cooperation and science for peace”. All these agendas have been accepted by the member states of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The presence of parliaments is crucial in driving concrete solutions at the upcoming 10th World Water Forum. The President of the World Water Council, Loïc Fauchon, once said, "Water is politics," underlining the importance of political solutions to the water challenges.

Therefore, water must be a political priority at all levels, from local to national and global. Members of parliament, representing the voice of the people, can exchange insights and practices on the water issues faced by communities.

Through the Indonesian House of Representatives, Indonesia will host a special session, "Parliamentary Meeting on the Occasion of the 10th World Water Forum," to facilitate parliamentary participation in the 2024 World Water Forum. It is hoped that the parliaments will participate and seize the opportunity to mobilize actions in achieving the forum’s goal of “Water for Shared Prosperity”.
