President Jokowi Officially Opens the 10th World Water Forum and Proudly Presents the Local and Sustainable Irrigation System Subak

Nusa Dua, May 20, 2024 - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) officially opened the 10th World Water Forum at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) on Monday (5/20/2024). In his speech, Jokowi presented the Balinese Subak irrigation system, which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2012 in recognition of its cultural, historical and ecological significance.

"The Indonesian people attach cultural value to water, including the Subak system in Bali, which has been practiced since the 11th century and is recognized as a world heritage site. Moreover, for the Balinese, water is a wealth that contains spiritual and cultural values that must be managed together," said Jokowi.

This is in line with the theme of the 10th World Water Forum, namely "Water for Shared Prosperity", which can be interpreted as three basic principles, namely avoiding competition and promoting equity, prioritizing comprehensive cooperation, including the use of innovative technology and financing, and supporting peace and mutual peace. All three can only be realized with one key word: collaboration.

"In Indonesia, collaboration is the key to the success of the restoration of the Citarum River, the development of green energy and the floating solar panels on the Cirata Reservoir, which is the largest in Southeast Asia and the third largest in the world," he added.

"For this reason, with the 10th World Water Forum, Indonesia hopes that the world can join hands to strengthen the commitment to work together to address global challenges related to water," he said.

The President of the World Water Council, Loïc Fauchon, described the participants of the 10th World Water Forum as "World Water Warriors" because this forum marks a shift towards concrete collective action.

“Thank you for preparing this Forum well and with great care. As World Water Warriors, we want to strengthen international action to ensure a more active and decentralized management of water and strengthen the rules of mediation for rivers, lakes and watersheds," said Loïc.

Meanwhile, the CEO and founder of SpaceX and Tesla Inc. Elon Musk, who was one of the speakers at the Opening Ceremony of the 10th World Water Forum, admitted that he was very impressed by the organization of this event.

“I felt comfortable at this event, it was like being at a waterfall," he said in his opening speech, referring to the event’s immersive backdrop decorations.

The 10th World Water Forum was held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18-25, 2024, under the main theme of "Water for Shared Prosperity" and six sub-themes: Water Security and Prosperity, Water for Humans and Nature, Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Governance, Cooperation and Hydro-Diplomacy, Sustainable Water Financing, and Knowledge and Innovation.
