Hosting the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18 to 25, 2024, holds immense promise for Indonesia as the host nation. Beyond merely showcasing its tourism offerings, the presence of this prestigious international water forum is poised to thrust the micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) onto the global stage.
This sentiment was echoed by Sandiaga Uno, Chair of Sector V Fair and Expo of the 10th World Water Forum, and also Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, in his statement on Friday, April 26, 2024.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has meticulously curated a selection of creative economy products and MSME offerings, particularly those from Bali. “These include culinary delights, teas, coffees, traditional Balinese woven fabrics (Endek), and a variety of handicrafts,” remarked Sandi.
The staging of the 10th World Water Forum presents a golden opportunity for Indonesia to showcase its strengths, including its rich cultural tapestry and vibrant tourism sector, with Bali taking center stage. Among the highlights will be the Melukat procession, or Balinese Water Purification Ceremony, a cherished Balinese tradition imbued with spiritual significance, with the concept of Rahina Tumpek Uye and the Upacara Segara Kerthi.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will facilitate delegates' participation in the Melukat procession, a deeply spiritual experience for the Balinese people. Local government officials will also be actively involved in this traditional ritual.
"As we approach the end of President Jokowi's administration, we intend to make this forum an event to remember. We are planning various side events at multiple locations," shared Sandiaga.
In collaboration with Jejak.in, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will offer delegates packages that calculate their carbon emissions using a carbon footprint calculator, encouraging them to contribute to environmental sustainability through mangrove planting and coral reef restoration efforts.
Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy will play a significant role in the Indonesia Pavilion, showcasing tourism content through virtual reality (VR), promoting low-carbon tourism packages, organizing fairs and expos, distributing Wonderful Indonesia souvenirs and goodie bags, introducing "Lokapala" game content and activations, and showcasing and retailing high-quality MSME products through a carefully curated selection.
"So, we offer these initiatives as part of our commitment to supporting this event, catering to both participants and esteemed heads of state and ministers attending the World Water Forum next month," emphasized Sandiaga.
Meanwhile, Endra S. Atmawidjaja, Vice Chair of the Secretariat of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum and Senior Adviser for Technology, Industry, and Environment to the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, emphasized that the 10th World Water Forum presents a pivotal opportunity for Indonesia to wield significant influence over water policy directions.
"From the outset, Indonesia has consistently advocated for water issues to be addressed at the highest levels of international discourse. Strong leadership and policy direction are essential," emphasized Endra in Jakarta.
The Melukat procession will kick off the series of events at the 10th World Water Forum. In addition to partaking in this traditional Balinese ritual, guests can savor local cuisine, enjoy traditional dances, and immerse themselves in Indonesian culture during the Cultural Night (Farewell) agenda.
As a platform for tourism promotion, once the activities of the 10th World Water Forum draw to a close, participants will embark on field trips to explore Bali's renowned tourist destinations, including the Water Museum in Tabanan, the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces, Lake Batur in Kintamani, and the Cultural Village in Ubud.
