Indonesia Proposes Establishment of New International Agency to Address Water Issuesat the 10th World Water Forum

The 10th World Water Forum is scheduled to take place from May 18 to 25, 2024, in Nusa Dua, Bali. As the host country, Indonesia has prepared several proposals to be presented at this international forum.

Endra S. Atmawidjaja, Special Advisor to the Minister of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) on Technology, Industry, and Environment, revealed that there are at least three commitment points to be proposed at the 10th World Water Forum.

One of them is the establishment of a new agency to oversee the development of the water sector and the impacts of climate change, called the Center of Excellence for Water and Climate Resilience.

"The issue of water is becoming increasingly intertwined with climate change. We see problems such as floods, droughts, and pollution. The current global water crisis is described as 'too much, too little, too dirty,'" said Endra during a virtual Media Briefing organized by the Ministry of Communication and Information (MCI) on Tuesday (April 16).

Moreover, Indonesia also plans to promote more extensively the integration of water management on small islands (integrated water resources management for small islands). Endra noted that many small islands actually lack access to clean water.

The Vice Chairman of the Secretariat of the National Committee for the 10th World Water Forum had previously proposed the establishment of a World Lake Day. He sees lakes as aspects that need to be preserved due to their crucial role as sources of raw water and flood control.
