Jakarta, May 2, 2024 - Indonesian National Education Day (Hari Pendidikan National), which is celebrated every year on May 2, is a crucial moment for the young generation to bring about change in Indonesia. The young generation can contribute in many ways, including in water conservation and sustainable water management.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Public Works and Public Housing (MPWH) Basuki Hadimuljono as Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee (NOC) of the 10th World Water Forum in his statement in Jakarta, on Thursday (2/5/2024).
He said that water is the most important source of human life and its quality must therefore be preserved. For this reason, it is important to educate about sustainable water management from an early age, especially in the face climate change.
"The younger generation can discuss water resources and solutions for keeping water clean with the relevant stakeholders," he said.
Sustainable water resources management, Basuki added, is in line with the theme of the 10th World Water Forum, which will be held in Nusa Dua, Bali, from May 18-25, 2024. "This event is the largest transboundary water forum in the world," he said.
Meanwhile, the Communications Ambassador of the 10th World Water Forum, Cinta Laura said that the younger generation can make an important contribution to preserving the resilience of water resources by doing the simplest things, such as using wisely in everyday life.
In addition, the younger generation can use various communication channels and technologies to spread messages about clean water conservation, sanitation and disaster mitigation.
Indonesia's commitment as host country of the 10th World Water Forum is clear in view of the country's vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and droughts, which are exacerbated by climate change.
"i would like to commend Indonesia for its proactive approach in addressing these pressing issues on a global platform," she said.
A number of programs for youth sessions are summarized in the Bali Youth Plan, including the #ShareWaterStories campaign, Youth Podcast: Water Talk, Young Water Sustainability Leaders (YWSL) 2024, Youth Book, and Final Youth Activities.
The YWSL 2024 series previously hosted an online bootcamp with 300 young participants from around the world. 60 young delegates from Asia, Africa, Europe, America and Oceania were selected for the 10th World Water Forum.
In addition to the Bali Youth Plan, the 10th World Water Forum also set a number of targets to achieve tangible results that can have a positive impact on the global management of water resources.
These goals include the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Climate and Water
Resilience, the formation of a Working Group on Integrated Water Resources Management on Small Islands and the designation of World Lakes Day. (Ridho Syukra/TR/Elvira Inda Sari).
