The Government of Indonesia and UCLG Signed MoU to Increase Participation from Local Governments in the 10th World Water Forum

New York - The Government of Indonesia, the United Cities and Local Government (UCLG), and the World Water Council (WWC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on cooperation in organizing the 10th World Water Forum on Local and Regional Governments Day of the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York, the United States of America, Wednesday (22/3/2023).

The signing of the MoU was carried out by the Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, as Deputy Chair of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum, UCLG Secretary General, Emilia Saiz, and the WWC President, Loic Fauchon. This agreement aims to mobilize authorities at the regional or city level to actively participate in the upcoming 10th World Water Forum in 2024 in Bali.


UCLG is an association of local government organizations recognized by the United Nations (UN) based in Barcelona, Spain. This association aims to facilitate city and regional governments to carry out their functions in developing potential.

Minister Basuki said that municipal and regional governments play a significant role in ensuring access to clean water and sanitation as well as urban and regional planning and management to achieve the SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation.


Minister Basuki explained that water is crucial for many aspects of our lives. however, the achievement of the SDG 6 is still far for expectations. Seven years remain until the 2030 agenda deadline, but more than one billion people worldwide still have lack access to safe water and sanitation facilities.


"There is still much to be done, we must act quickly with urgency. Water and sanitation issues must be managed jointly at all levels, starting from the head of state, ministers, parliament, river basin managers, as well as municipal and regional governments. That is why we support the implementation of this cooperation agreement," said Minister Basuki.

 As host of the 10th World Water Forum in 2024, Minister Basuki said that Indonesia is committed to continuing all the results of discussions at the UN 2023 Water Conference and ensuring this commitment is translated into concrete actions.


"With the theme Water for Shared Prosperity, the 2024 World Water Forum aims to strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships in the grateful for the opportunity and this good collaboration to achieve the SDGs together," said Minister Basuki.
