Young Water Sustainability Leaders Summit 2024:Encouraging Youth Participation in the 10th World Water Forum

As the 10th World Water Forum approaches, Indonesia is actively promoting the participation and contributions of young people worldwide through the Young Water Sustainability Leaders Summit, held virtually on March 23, 2024.

The YWSL event commenced with an Online Bootcamp involving 300 young participants from across the globe. The YWSL series will culminate in the selection of winners who will serve as delegates at the 10th World Water Forum in Bali.

Vice Chairman of the National Organizing Committee of the 10th World Water Forum / Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia (PUPR), Basuki Hadimuljono, emphasized that the event serves as a platform for future leaders to address various water resources challenges and engage in in-depth discussions with experts.

"I hope this initiative will contribute to the development of skilled and responsive young generations in the field of water resources," Minister Basuki said.

The Importance of Youth Engagement

The availability of clean water continues to be under pressure due to rapid population growth, uncontrolled development, and climate change. Globally, approximately 2.1 billion people still lack access to water, and 80% of the population in rural areas still rely on inadequate water sources.

"Various water resource-related issues have persisted for decades and will continue unless we pursue solutions beyond the ordinary," Minister Basuki stated during the Young Water Sustainability Leaders Summit 2024 webinar.

Therefore, it is crucial to implement integrated water resource management through strong collaboration among various stakeholders. One of the most significant drivers of integrated water resources management is human resources, especially the younger generation.

Youth and the 10th World Water Forum

Minister Basuki believes that the YWSL Summit 2024, which involves experts, academics, and policymakers, will enhance the competencies of young people to contribute to concrete solutions to water issues.

As the host country, Indonesia invites young people to actively participate in the upcoming 10th World Water Forum and collaborate with other stakeholders to address both current and potential future water challenges.

"The 10th World Water Forum 2024 is an excellent opportunity for young people to engage in discussions and knowledge exchange with various stakeholders from different countries to find strategic and implementable solutions to various water resources challenges," Minister Basuki emphasized.
